How to Format a Linux Hard Disk to Windows

Windows operating system and Linux execute best on their specific file systems. It is a known fact that Linux executes better on hard disks that are formatted using the ext3 file format system, whereas Windows executes well in a disk that has been formatted on NTFS file system. If you are running Linux as your default operating system and would like to switch to Windows, there are two simple ways in which you can reformat a hard disk that has been formatted for Linux operating system to enable you to install Windows operating system. For the procedure, you will need the installation disc for each of the operating system, i.e. Linux and Windows.

  1. Insert the Windows installation disc into the CD-ROM and reboot the PC. Give it sometime as Windows goes through the boot-up sequence. Press “Enter” to boot the system from the CD-ROM and press “F8” to accept the terms and conditions for using Windows.
  2. If the installation identifies the presence of another copy of Windows, press the “Esc” key to exit the installation process.
  3. Using the arrow keys, scroll through the existing partitions and select the one that you want to delete. Press ‘D’ to delete and ‘L’ thereafter to confirm the process. Thereafter, the installation will display the current partition and “Unknown”. Repeat the entire procedure until all partitions have been erased.
  4. To create a new partition to install Windows in, select the partition labeled “Unpartitioned space” and press “Enter” to create a new partition you will use to install Windows in.
  5. When prompted for file system to use, choose NTFS if you want only Windows operating system. To install both Windows and Linux, select FAT32 file system.
  6. Proceed to install Windows on the new partition.

to use the Ubuntu installation disc :

  1. Insert the Ubuntu installation disc into the CD-ROM and boot the PC with it. During the boot-up process, select “Try Ubutu without……” this will enable you to install Linux without affecting the current status of your system.
  2. Load the Partition Editor application, this can be found by clicking the menu “System” then selecting “Administration” on the drop down menu.
  3. Choose the partition in which Linux has been installed in and select “Delete”. Thereafter, select “New” to create a new partition to install Windows in. choose NTFS as the preferred file format system.
  4. Click “Apply” to accept the changes and proceed to install Windows in the new partition that you have just created..

How to Pimp Your Windows XP Desktop to Look Like a Cool Mac Desktop

If you use the default Windows desktop, chances are that you could use a "look and feel" overhaul. The Mac OS X desktop is widely considered to be cleaner and more intuitive. The following instructions will show you how to get that Mac look for your PC by installing some cool, free applications. Some of the instructions may be a tad advanced for some users, but give it a try.

  1. Remove all unused shortcuts and icons. Right click the desktop and go to "Arrange icons by" and uncheck "Show desktop icons". You should now have a completely clean desktop. Don’t be afraid. You can still access the My Computer, My Documents, and Recycle Bin from Windows Explorer.
  2. Install RKLauncher. RKLauncher (also called RKDock) is a free Windows version of the animated Mac taskbar, or "dock". You can download it here. RKLauncher comes with a pretty cool theme. If you want to make your dock look exactly like a Mac though, try RealDock for RKLaucher, a great clone of the Mac Dock appearance. RKLauncher's official build hasn’t been updated lately, so if you would like something more up-to-date, grab a nightly build from Aqua-Soft. The farther down you go, the newer the build. Another good dock program is ObjectDock by Stardock, you can skin it to be anything you want and it does the animations and everything.
  3. Hide the taskbar. It doesn't make sense to have both RKDock and the Windows taskbar (unless you rely on the notification area a lot). Right click a blank space in RKDock, go to the settings tab, select behavior then on the box with check marks select “Hide the Windows Taskbar”, and hit OK. This makes the taskbar disappear. You can also just move the taskbar to the front of the screen.
  4. Add Widgets. Widgets are desktop toys to entertain and to inform. Think of them like things you’d put on a real desk: a picture frame, a newspaper to a dancing hula girl! But they’re on your PC desktop, not your real desk. You’ll get it once you see it. They could be a fun addition to your boring computer. Download free widgets from the Yahoo! Widgets page. You'll download a widget machine called Yahoo! Widget Engine, which comes with widgets like a picture frame, analog clock, calendar, and weather display. You can get more widgets like RSS news feeds and a dancing hula girl from the widgets gallery. Yahoo! has also released an engine that can help you make your own widgets and is available here. Kludget Engine is also an option for running widgets. It allows you to run Apple's Dashboard widgets on Windows and Linux. It is free and open sourced. Available here
  5. Get Safari for Windows Just Get the new Safari 5, for Windows here, or get Firefox here. You can skin Firefox to look like Safari.
  6. Change your wallpaper to look like Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. Or you can get a high resolution wallpaper here which won't make your computer mimic a mac desktop but will add a sense of style and a unique touch.
  7. Install Expose from docs.kr. With this program (screen shot shows the 'Windows Vista Flip' move) you can set your Windows to spread out at the stroke of a key! A free download!
  8. Get cdEjectLoad. This small application lets you eject or insert the cd/dvd tray with a push of a key, similar to the Mac feature (which uses the special Eject key of a Mac keyboard). It even has the same visual feedback as the Mac.
  9. Move your buttons. ShellWM is a “titlebar-only” shell replacer. It lets you have the maximize, minimize and close buttons on the left for free. You'll want to download this theme
  10. Change your mouse pointers. For the full effect, download a new set of mouse pointers. Save these to your computer (preferably in C:\WINDOWS\Cursors). It may be a good idea to make a folder within this for easier setup.) To setup these cursors, choose Mouse from the Control Panel, click the Pointers tab, and set your new pointers appropriately. For a the best OS pointer, use FLyakiteOS. If you don't feel like changing cursors manually, you can install them all with a simple Mac OS X Mouse Cursors Installer
  11. Get KeyVolume: Adjust Volume with Visual Cue Quickly (Shortcuts) Try the app KeyVolume. This will allow you to adjust your volume with keyboard shortcuts. This app makes volume adjustments look just like on a Mac. If you don't have a keyboard with volume controls you should give it a try. The latest version lets you customize the hotkeys.
  12. Keep trying, tweaking and playing. Try customizing all of the applications you downloaded.

How to Create a Positive Feeling With Your Avatar

You can impact other's feelings about you through the use of your avatar. Researchers at the University of Texas tested the types of avatars people used and found that the connotations associated with an avatar impacted people's perception of the person using that avatar. To avoid negative perceptions, there are numerous things to consider when making or reshaping your online avatar.

  1. Take care what your avatar is wearing and the color connotations. Costumes or outfits that represent villainous characters, menacing gangs, historic figures, etc. will likely not be received warmly, but will be viewed as a threat by many people. The University of Texas study is suggestive that authoritarian or anti-social uniforms result in negative reactions from others. Also pay attention to the colors used; lighter colors might be more effective depending on the context of the avatar.
  2. Prefer a real photo of you over a cartoon. It doesn't get more genuine than the real you. Patrick Winfield says that use of a photo "can bring you more credibility and trust." Dan Benjamin points out that humans are hardwired to remember a face, so it makes sense to make the most of this evolutionary reality.
  3. Avoid using awkward angles or "blocks with props". People seeking to connect online are more likely to want to see you, not a creative angle or favorite teddy bear obscuring half your face. By all means, photograph your more attractive profile, but don't make it an obscuring shot.
  4. Try to make it the age you are now! OK, so you looked adorable at 3 (clearly Australian talk show host Rove McManus believes so), but unless you have the renown of someone like Rove, you probably won't pull it off because there are no other reference points for people to check out "the real you" (Rove is on TV almost each week). Same goes for using your pet, your favorite drawing, or an out-of-focus blur. And the least effective things are a blank space or relying on the generic site avatar; these tend to be suggestive of spammers, affiliate marketers gone ballistic, or people lacking in real interest.
  5. Smile. A smile is an almost universal means for showing lack of aggression and establishes a warm and welcoming demeanor. A successful avatar helps people connect with you because they see the person you really are and a smile counts for more than words can ever say.
  6. Select a good avatar from the outset. Changing it too frequently causes confusion for people and can lead people to distrust you or fail to recognize you. There are always exceptions, but unless you have aged rapidly, or had plastic surgery or you're famous, maybe the exceptions don't apply to your fragile logo-building at this point in time. Be very, very certain that frequent changes won't damage your instant recognition factor.
TIPS :
  • If you're trying to hide or you are creating a fictitious character, the rules change for you. By all means develop your persona differently; just expect differing reactions and for most people, probably reduced attachment. However, this said, it may well depend on where you are placing an anonymous or fictional avatar; for some sites, this is simply more acceptable and better understood than on others. For some, keeping back the "real you" photo represents that moment of truth and total trust in the person with whom you share the photo.[10]
  • Many avatar experts advise keeping the same avatar across the internet. This advice probably holds if you're trying to develop a single online "brand" or "personality" type but if you're into various different online activities, you might like to consider "grouping" your avatars to suit each type of activity instead.

How to Become a Pixel Artist

Pixel Art is a form of electronic art created using a computer and a drawing software. It's associated with creating a picture by filling it in, pixel by pixel, rather than using graphic tools. In this guide, we will be using MS paint, available on any Windows computer (3.0x and up) to create your very own pixel images.

  1. Become familiar with colors. Color is one of the most important parts of your image in terms of effect. Even black-white images have different shades of gray, which can be counted as color. In MS paint, as in most graphics programs, an advanced color picker is available. Let's call it RGB/HSL box. So, to open up RGB/HSL box, just double click any color, or click "colors" and select "edit colors" from the menu bar. Click "Define Custom Colors". Here, you see 6 text boxes: Hue, Sat, Lum and Red, Blue, Green. After experimenting with each, you will be able to figure out what they do. You can also change those values by moving the "target" on around a big color map and by moving the black arrow up and down, you can change the luminosity of the color. Experiment with the RGB/HSL box and then move on to next step.
  2. Learn to dither. Dithering is a technique that blends your colors together, making them look smoother, or just creating interesting textures. There are 3 types of dithering: Basic dithering, stylized dithering and anti-aliasing. You will only learn basic dithering here, but it is easy to learn other two thereafter.
  3. Practice shading and lighting. When shading objects, you must always consider the lighting point, or sun. Once you decide where it is, imagine that object is in real life and shade it the way it would be shaded in real life. Decrease lum value of a color by 30 and increase hue by 5 and shade the area in. Then, dither it so the colors blend. Now, modify the shaded color: decrease lum value by 30 and increase hue by 10. Shade the area inside the shaded area; however, make it small, like 2 pixels or so. Then, dither. Now, depending on what material you're drawing (shiny or not), you need to add in lighting. This is done by increasing original color by 40 or 50 (whichever one looks better) and drawing a line or a little circle opposite from the shaded areas. It has to be about 2 pixels away from the outline and it should look real. Again, use dithering to fit it in.
  4. Draw line art. Line art is the main part of your objects: it's the outline. Think of an object. Then, zoom in and draw the object, pixel by pixel. The only way you can get better at line art is if you practice a lot. Now, you can start colouring in the image using your techniques.
  5. Save your masterpiece. PNG and GIF formats are preferable over JPEG because they preserve the colors efficiently, rather than creating a "muddy" look. Whereas a BMP would preserve the image, it does not compress it at all and could have a very big file size.

TIPS :
  • Isometric pixel art is used to provide a 3-dimensional view without actual 3-dimensional processing. Objects are drawn from 26-30 degree angle although some isometric works are drawn from a 90 degree angle.
  • Look at other pixel art works. Paste them in Paint, zoom in and see how they're made. Study them to learn about new techniques but don't plagiarize.
  • Learn photo manipulation. Use a photo you took yourself or get permission to use someone else's photo. Paste the photo in Paint and make it smaller. Then, outline it. After that, erase the entire inside. Re-shade it so it looks pixelish.
  • Try to make SAT values of your colors under 150 because above 150, your colors start to look too bright.
  • Be creative.
  • You don't have to use ms paint to create pixel art. You can use programmes such as Photoshop OR for mac Pixen. Most companies that use pixel art eg mobile phone games use photoshop purely for the speed. A tint can be applied over a piece of work rather than changing every single pixel to a different colour eg for water.
  • A great way to test out pixel art is to find out the resolution of your mobile phone screen. You can find this out in your manual or even on the phone websites.
  • Animations can be created in photoshop, which can also be played on mobile phones, msn and blogs.
  • K.I.S.S! Keep it simple, stupid! Keep the number of colours to a minimum. Pixel art is created for devices with low processing power so the more info in the file, the harder the device has to work.
